Objective

SW 5th Avenue is a primary corridor running east-west through the historic Porters Community, connecting Porters to many amenities like Depot Park, the Power District, Haisley Lynch Park, the Innovation District, the 6th Street Rail Trail, Tumblin Creek Park, and the University of Florida. In the past, this busy corridor was not especially safe for pedestrians as there was no continuous sidewalk. In 2013 the CRA proposed a sidewalk on the north side of SW 5th Ave and neighborhood gateways with the goal of improving the neighborhood’s connectivity, safety, and identity. The GCRA team worked closely with the community in identifying the scope of the project and choosing the Porters gateways. The project was completed in August of 2015.

The SW 5th Ave sidewalk project won the 2015 “Out of the Box” award from the Florida Redevelopment Association (FRA).
