Objective

A major football game-day destination, this segment of NW 1st Ave. consists of a mixture of land-uses including student housing, commercial businesses, religious institutions, and fraternities. A constrained right-of-way required creative design thinking to accommodate multiple streetscape elements as prioritized by stakeholders such as: pedestrian facilities, landscaping, lighting, parking (vehicular, scooter, and bicycle), undergrounding utilities, solid waste, and delivery vehicle access. A significant aspect of the project was the coordination and inclusion of undergrounding overhead utility facilities with the project. It also included GRU upgrading an existing undersized waterline that supports existing and future development in the area. The resulting design is an organized and efficient layout for a multi-functioning corridor that includes utility and infrastructure upgrades, increasing available on-street parking, street trees, pedestrian accommodations, decorative lighting, bicycle parking, and dumpster and solid waste facilities.
