New Dates Announced for Housing Workshops in Porters and Pleasant Street
Updated 8/18/2021 – Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Pleasant Street Housing Workshop on Wednesday, August 18 is canceled. The workshops will be rescheduled at a date to be determined.
Updated 8/13/2021 – Due to the potential development of Tropical Depression Fred, and out of an abundance of caution, the Pleasant Street Housing Workshop on Sunday, August 15 is canceled. At this time the workshop for Wednesday, August 18 will still be held from 5-7 p.m. and any updates will be shared as soon as they are available.
The City of Gainesville’s Community Reinvestment Area is exploring opportunities to build new housing on city-owned property in the Porters and Pleasant Street communities and is inviting neighbors to get involved. Community workshops will be held at each of the sites and all are welcome to attend.
The goal of the workshop is to identify ‘how might we create a redevelopment strategy for City-owned properties in the Porters Quarters and the Pleasant Street neighborhoods that ensures existing neighbors, as well as those with low- and moderate- incomes, and those marginalized based on race and ethnicity will share in the benefits of neighborhood growth?’
At the workshops, there will be moveable wood boxes and stakes with strings for participants to visually “map out” their ideas for the shape, rooms, and location of the possible development. Conversations will center around these questions: Who needs housing in Porters Quarters and the Pleasant Street neighborhoods? and What is affordable?
Porters Quarters Neighborhood:
When: 3:00-5:00 pm on Sunday, August 8; and 5:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 11
Where: 405 SW 5th Ave., Gainesville, FL, the home development site
Pleasant Street Neighborhood:
When: 3:00-5:00 pm on Sunday, August 15; and 5:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 18
Where: 414 NW 5th Ave, Gainesville, FL, the home development site
These workshops will be held outdoors and masks and social distancing are highly recommended.
In the event of severe weather, the workshop(s) will be postponed to a later date.
