Join the Workshops!
The NE 8th Avenue and Waldo Road – Citizens Field Revitalization Project is a major effort to improve and redevelop the area within and around this intersection. It focuses on key landmarks like Citizens Field, the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center, the Dwight H. Hunter Northeast Pool, and nearby facilities. This project brings together many partners and relies on community input to shape its plans.

NV5 is working with the City of Gainesville and the Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area (GCRA) to develop a site plan for the project area. The project includes a plan for facilities and land use at the sports complex, as well as recommendations to improve the streetscape on NE 8th Avenue (from NE 9th Street to NE 22nd Street) and NE Waldo Road (from NE 12th Avenue to East University Avenue).
We invite neighborhood associations, sports groups, and community members to share their ideas and feedback to guide the project’s design.

About the Project
Our mission: Develop a transformative park complex that meets the multiple needs of our local community, serves as a premier destination for athletics, fosters economic development, creates active and vibrant public spaces, and embodies the unique values and character of our community.
The GCRA plays a key role in this effort, which may include funding the construction of economic development initiatives, managing façade improvement grants, convening the community to help guide the development of the revitalization plan, and providing expert advice.
The 34-acre project site includes:
– Citizens Field at Milton Lewis Stadium
– Dwight H. Hunter Northeast Pool
– Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center
– Martin Luther King Jr. Skate Park
– Gainesville Fire Rescue facilities
This area is home to a wide range of amenities, including a stadium, sports fields, a skate park, a pool, and a community center.
The project includes plans to enhance the streetscape along NE 8th Avenue and NE Waldo Road. In 2022, the GCRA expanded its boundaries to include all city facilities within the unified 34-acre project site. This expansion enabled a partnership with the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department to fund a feasibility and traffic study.
Since July 2024, several public engagements have been held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center to gather community feedback, the most recent being held in November 2024.
